How to Stay Fit as You Age

As we age, we are more likely to say that our bodies just aren’t what they used to be, and participate in less and less physical activity. But you’ve certainly noticed that the people who don’t stop exercising regularly as they age are the ones that we say look the youngest and fittest, constantly impressing us with their physical ability. But it’s never too late to start exercising and to find a physical activity that fits your stamina levels and schedule. So, if you are a senior looking to get some extra activity, here are some ways you can do that:

The best part about yoga is that the focus isn’t on physical ability, but rather on the calm mental state that comes with exercising. Yoga can be adapted to anyone, and there are special classes that are designed for seniors, which don’t push them too far and have their age in mind. Group classes are a great way to stay motivated and meet new people, but if you don’t like exercising in public or if you have specific training needs, you can schedule 1-on-1 classes with a personal trainer. It will not only get you active and get your heart rate up, but it will greatly improve your balance, which is crucial to preventing falls and injuries.

Aqua aerobics

Have you ever noticed that people who live near the water tend to be more fit and active? There is a reason why people like spending time in the water, and it’s partially because of the weight it takes off your joints and the ease of movement it allows. People who live in coastal cities, especially in Australia where the water is so often perfect for taking a dip, get a lot of simple exercise just by being in the water: swimming, jogging or doing aqua aerobics. It’s perfect for seniors, especially for those with low mobility, because it eliminates the danger of falls and common exercise-related injuries. This is the reason why so many retirement living homes likeMark Moran Vaucluse include aqua aerobics in their centers.

All too often, jogging is painted as this millennial activity where people in tight yoga pants go for a light run in the morning with a kale shake. But in reality, jogging can be a great way for someone to stay in shape. Plus, it can be incorporated into so many other activities and planned in any part of the day. When you go out for a jog, you can use it as an opportunity to see some friends, walk your dog, pick up a few things at the grocery store or simply have some time for yourself to clear your mind.

Everyday activities

We mustn’t ignore the enormous benefits of all the little things we do during the day. Whether it’s taking care of grandkids, gardening, cleaning the house, making dinner or any other activity, all those little things add up, and we have to be sure we don’t drop the habit of staying active around the house. If you don’t have anything to do, you can ask about volunteering in your neighborhood with different charities. Whatever you choose, just make sure you’re not sitting at home inactive the entire day. Any reason you can find to get dressed, put yourself together and get out of the house is enough, just make sure you have one. Remember that age is just a number, and the only thing stopping you is your own thoughts that you can’t do something just because you are “too old”. The sooner you start being active the better, so start slow, go for a walk and stay as active as you can.
