How to Stay Fit as You Age

As we age, we are more likely to say that our bodies just aren’t what they used to be, and participate in less and less physical activity. But you’ve certainly noticed that the people who don’t stop exercising regularly as they age are the ones that we say look the youngest and fittest, constantly impressing us with their physical ability. But it’s never too late to start exercising and to find a physical activity that fits your stamina levels and schedule. So, if you are a senior looking to get some extra activity, here are some ways you can do that:

Yoga

The best part about yoga is that the focus isn’t on physical ability, but rather on the calm mental state that comes with exercising. Yoga can be adapted to anyone, and there are special classes that are designed for seniors, which don’t push them too far and have their age in mind. Group classes are a great way to stay motivated and meet new people, but if you don’t like exercising in public or if you have specific training needs, you can schedule 1-on-1 classes with a personal trainer. It will not only get you active and get your heart rate up, but it will greatly improve your balance, which is crucial to preventing falls and injuries.

Aqua aerobics

Have you ever noticed that people who live near the water tend to be more fit and active? There is a reason why people like spending time in the water, and it’s partially because of the weight it takes off your joints and the ease of movement it allows. Whether it’s taking care of grandkids, gardening, cleaning the house, making dinner or any other activity, all those little things add up, and we have to be sure we don’t drop the habit of staying active around the house.
