With its heavy winters and terrible snow storms, summer is definitely the best time to visit the USA’s East Coast. In fact, if you’re renting a car in any of the major cities, it’s quite easy to drive from one place to the next, and the views make for an unforgettable road trip. Whether you’re looking for a family vacation, an outdoorsy adventure or a new city to explore, the East Coast has got a little bit for everyone. Here are four of the top destinations for visitors:

1. Washington D.C.

With its many museums, tours, concerts and cultural events, the country’s capital is the best place to start a visit to the States. Plus, the city is friendly to tourists and has easy access to public transportation: the Metro is easy to ride –and understand– and you can always rent a bike to ride by the beautiful Potomac river. Don’t miss making a visit to Congress, the Smithsonian or the Lincoln Memorial, some of the most iconic places in the city. The city is small and safe, so it’s possible to walk around and enjoy some great time outdoors in between visiting the countless museums and cultural activities the city has to offer.

2. Maine

Another great place to visit in the East Coast is the state of Maine, which has beautiful views and natural attractions if you’re looking for a more outdoorsy destination. Maine’s Route 1 road trip is a quintessential American experience, since it’s also the country’s very first interstate highway. In fact, you could rent a car and start up the road trip in Maine and take the interstate highway down to South Carolina, where you will find some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. Some places to stop along the way are: Kennebunkport –which has a great nautical charm– Scarborough River and Cape Elizabeth.

3. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

If you decide to take your car from Maine down to South Carolina, you should probably think about ending the trip at Myrtle Beach. Myrtle Beach is the hub of the Grand Strand, a 60-mile string of beaches in South Carolina that are famous in the East Coast. They have boardwalks with arcades, souvenir stands and restaurants that are fun to visit, and family-friendly hotelsespecially if you’re traveling with kids.

Myrtle Beach is also known for its great seafood restaurants and famous free festivals, particularly throughout the summer season. In fact, the Ocean Drive Beach Music Festival is known for being what officially kicks off the summer season in South Carolina. Other places to explore include the fishing piers, which are free and open to the public and The Boardwalk.

4.  Charlottesville, VA

The great thing about Charlottesville is that it is one of the most historically rich places of the East Coast. A city in Virginia, it’s home to many important landmarks, like Monticello, a mansion that has rebuilt slave quarters, and James Monroe’s home, which still has many of its original furnishings. If what you’re looking for is a great place to better understand America’s history, there’s no better state to visit than Virginia. Additionally, Charlottesville has developed a rich arts and entertainment scene that booms during the summer season with live and outdoor music festivals. Finally, Charlottesville is also well known for its more than 35 vineyards along theMonticello Wine Trail, and its batch of breweries that make up the Brew Ridge Trail.
