Build a Soccer Field in Your Backyard in Four Easy Steps

Building a spacious soccer field in the middle of your backyard is one of the best ways to utilize all that free space and actually make something out of it – of course, turning it into a lawn is quite all right, but having a chance to play soccer every single day is much better on so many levels. If you have the space, but are unsure how to turn it into a field, here’s how.

Design the space

First of all, you need to make sure your backyard is actually big enough to accommodate a soccer field in the first place – is there enough space for everything you’ll need or not? Take into consideration that you can’t just occupy the entire backyard without consulting your family and taking their wishes into consideration, but if you have enough room, your job will be much easier. Just determine the size of the field – this can vary and there are lots of options, depending on how much space you have – place four flags in opposite corners and you’re good to go! Of course, don’t forget the penalty boxes and other features of a proper soccer field.

Build a fence

Now that you’re sure a field can fit into your backyard and you’ve determined its size, it’s time to protect the perimeter and build a sort of a fence around it. This isn’t absolutely necessary and not everyone is a fan of putting up a wall around their field, yet this step is crucial especially if you live in a residential area where the chances your ball will end up in your neighbor’s backyard are huge. A fence will also protect your own house against inexperienced soccer players, so it’s a win for everyone involved. If you have a fence that’s high enough, no accidents can happen and you’ll be free to hit the ball as hard as you can.

Set up the goals

You can’t play FIFA-regulated soccer without goals, can you? The same goes for your backyard soccer field too, so start looking for reliable soccer goals that will turn your dream into reality. There are numerous options out there, as well as a bunch of different sizes, and all you need to do is find a set of goals that will suit you and your fellow players the most. Once you get them, your field will instantly become more professional and visually attractive, which is why goals are such a big part of this entire process.

Prepare the surface

Most people think that you don’t need anything apart from a patch of well-maintained grass to keep your soccer field up and running, but that’s quite far from the truth. Yes, you can start playing on basically every piece of land there is, but if you want your field to look different and become one of the best in the neighborhood, you need to invest some time and money into it. You can choose natural grass – i.e. the grass that’s already there – or artificial grass, and the latter may be more practical, especially for people living in areas with harsh weather conditions, including extreme high and low temperatures. Artificial turf can withstand all kinds of bad weather, as well as a heavy use, and it also requires almost no maintenance at all, so take it into consideration too.

Building a soccer field in your backyard isn’t something everyone would be happy to do, but just try to imagine all those hours of carefree joy you’ll be spending there with your friends, work buddies and kids, and you’ll understand why this is one of the best ways to utilize an empty backyard.
