5 Ways to Turn Your Yard into a Family Sanctuary

The backyard can simply be a place where you let the dog run around for a couple of hours or a place where you keep all of the things you don’t want to throw out but have no place for in the house. Or it can be so much more. A true family backyard can become your personal oasis, a sanctuary the whole family can enjoy.

It can be a place of peace, love, and positivity, a place where you can spend those lazy Sunday afternoons with the kids over lemonade and ice-cream, tending to a beautiful flower garden and making lifelong memories. Here are the five best ways you can turn your backyard into a family sanctuary.

Create flower and vegetable gardens

Strategically placing various greenery, flowers, and vegetable gardens around your backyard has numerous benefits and can completely transform the look and feel of the setting. Firstly, you want to tidy up the yard, and declutter it thoroughly to make way for the things you actually need.

The next step entails raising a vertical garden on the fence and sectioning off an area that will later become your flower or vegetable garden. If you can spare the room, you can raise both at the same time. This will not only allow you to grow your own vegetables, but it will also bring a warm, serene feeling to your backyard.

Build a play area for the kids

The kids need to have their own territory here as well, so don’t forget to dedicate a few square meters to building their new favorite play area. The great thing is, the dog will have a blast playing here too, so it’s a win-win!

This project can be as simple as building a short obstacle course, or it can be as complicated and time-consuming as building a backyard castle or a treehouse – the possibilities are numerous. Be sure to get the kids involved in this project as well, as they will be able to tell you exactly what they want to be included in their little backyard battlefield.

Gather around a warm fire

There is nothing quite as serene and peaceful as gathering around a crackling fire with your family and enjoying an afternoon barbecue, or an evening backyard camping trip with delicious s’mores roasting over the fire.

So, you want to have a small barbecue area encircled by logs or wooden furniture with throw pillows, and consider open fire pits instead or traditional grills. Fire pits are an excellent way to create that outdoor camping feel in your very own backyard, so grab a few wooden sticks and get cracking on those marshmallows!

Decorate the patio

Building a patio is a short, inexpensive project you can do over the weekend, but building an awesome patio the entire family will love takes some time and careful consideration. Be sure to choose recycled wood from factories and supermarkets that will otherwise throw them away in order to save money and make your patio look more rustic and delightfully quaint.

Don’t forget to enrich the setting with comfortable furniture, complete with colorful throws and blankets for those chilly evenings spent sipping on a warm cup of cocoa. You can also complete the set with beautiful lantern lighting above the seating area to bring a fairy-tale ambiance to life.

Introduce vivid details

Finally, you want to think about adding all of the details that would make every family member happier and feel more at home. So, think about giving the fence a fresh coat of paint, or introducing a bird feeder, or a centerpiece fountain in the middle of the yard.

Highlight the grass area with warm walkway lighting leading from the patio to the fire pit and decorate the trail with handmade stepping stones. The possibilities are endless, just let your imagination run free.

The backyard should be a peaceful oasis where your kids can play, dream up new worlds, and grow up to become good, loving adults. Be sure to use these essential tips to transform your backyard into a true family sanctuary.
